Friday afternoon, while Squad 2 and Ambulance 1 were on a medical aid, York Ambulance was dispatched for a simultaneous call to The Heli-pad at York Hospital for an in-coming DHART helicopter. The Fire Department is no longer required to do helicopter stand-by details due to the recent construction of an FAA approved heli-pad. York Ambulance is required to go to the heli-pad to transport the helicopter crew and equipment over to the ER and then transport the patient to the waiting helicopter. Since the ambulance was tied up, Chief Chris Balentine (C-1) made the decision to send Engine 6 to assist at the heli-pad. a York Beach firefighter and a York Village firefighter went and picked up York Ambulance’s second rig to complete the shuffle to and from the York Hospital ER.
