Today at approximately 1330 York Village Fire was toned out to respond to the area of Middle Pond for a woods fire. Middle pond is a remote area near Folly pond which are York and Kittery Water District protected water areas as some of both towns water supplies come from area ponds and lakes. York Water District does have some first response firefighting capabilities as this is a popular destination for recreationalists and small fires are common in the area. Crews were able to get quite a ways into the access roads and deploy forestry hose to reach the fireline. Firefighters found a fire approximately 300×500 moving along the duff and burning down into the ground as much as 8-12″ in spots. Companies worked until nightfall before packing up and heading out of the woods.
The following morning before the Maine Forest Service and York Firefighters could patrol the area a re-kindle was called in crews responded and found some minor hot spots which were mopped up in just over 2 hours. Many Thanks to the mutual aid which responded to the first fire including Eliot, Kittery, South Berwick, Ogunquit, Wells, Rollinsford and York Beach, We also received mutual aid from the Town of York Highway department, York Water District, Kittery Water District, and York Police.
