York Village Fire was toned out to respond to Carrie Lynn Lane for a report of a Hazardous Materials Incident. While enroute companies were advised that it was a garbage truck that had a bag containing acrylic acid which was off-gassing, and smoking. On arrival
Companies set up a perimeter and requested the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Fire Department Haz-Mat Team. Meanwhile a second alarm was sounded for manpower to respond to the scene and to cover the York Village Fire station. Crews from York Village Fire and PNSY Fire entered the “Hot zone” and identified the chemicals involved. They consisted of: Muriatic acid, Bromine, and Calcium Chloride, the latter two being pool chemicals. They came in contact with eachother in the back of the Waste Management truck and caused a vapor cloud. The two Waste Management personnel were decontaminated at the scene and transported to York Hospital by York Ambulance. They were treated and released. There were no injuries to firefighters. Maine DEP responded to ensure no environmental threat and they removed the remainder of the chemicals. Thank You to the agencies who responded and assisted us with this incident today.
