Tuesday would prove to be a busy day for Squad 2 (A sure sign of the fast approaching Summer Season). When the Fulltime Capt.’s take vacation time the shifts go out to the other Fulltime Capt.’s, if they don’t pick up the shifts they then go out to the few Volunteer’s that are approved “Fill-In’s” Several Members that meet the requirements are allowed to work paid shifts when the fulltime Capt.’s are out. With all the Capt.’s out Firefighter Zach Apgar picked up the 24 hour shift. The day started like any other at York Village Fire, Shift change at 8 am with coffee and stories from the coffee club members, followed by the daily truck checks and chores. During the morning chores Firefighter Apgar found several items lying around the station and pieced them together to make a great uniform. (As always we like to have to fun in our down time). The day would be busy with several Medical’s and a “wire’s down” across the road call. Several members spent the day helping out around the station and others showed up for a “firehouse” dinner which is a tradition when a “fill-in” is working where several of the volunteers will come down to the station and cook a big meal together. Shortly after dinner the Squad was sent out for another medical aid, and not long after returning to the station would be sent out for back to back “smoke in the building” calls the shift would round out with another medical in the early morning hours. Squad 2 under the direction of Firefighter Apgar would run a total of 8 calls for service before the shifts end which is a sure sign that summer in this coastal community is well on its way.
