Portsmouth Naval Shipyard crews were kept busy all evening battling a fire aboard the USS Miami, a nuclear submarine which is in dry-dock being overhauled. Approximately 2100 hours York Village Fire was toned to respond with “any available apparatus” to the Shipyard. Within minutes Engine 4 was enroute with a crew
of 6 and C-1 picked up an additional four personnel. Once on scene at the Shipyard York Engine 4 was ordered to standby for RIT operations. The crew split into two four firefighter teams and C-1 and another member stoodby and assisted with administrative functions. Extensive mutual aid was summoned to the scene, including firefighters from Portland, and South Portland, Massport Logan Airport Fire Dept, Hanscom AFB Fire Dept. and Groton Ct. Submarine Base FD. Additionally Firefighters from the following towns were called to the fire for mutual aid and/or station coverage.
