It is the end of an era at York Village Fire. At 0800 this morning, John Hunt went off duty for the last time. John has been one of the three paid firefighters at the YFD since 1979. John started as a volunteer in the late 1960’s.
John has seen alot of changes in his 35 years of service as a full time firefighter, equipment has changed, many volunteers have come and gone. Some things still remain the same, though: The work is hard and dirty and the members at the YFD are a dedicated bunch. John will be missed as a career member, he could always be found working on something around the firehouse. He cared about the job and gave 110% all the time. For example, the morning he retired after 0800 when he had been relieved. He was found assisting the oncoming paid firefighter with shoveling out the firehouse from the snowfall that occurred the night before.
As a fire apparatus chauffeur he was as dependable as they come, he handled his assigned fire apparatus; Squad 2, with the utmost of care and would never fail to get water to the crews on hoselines. He mentored many young firefighters get their time and mileage on our apparatus before being turned loose to chauffeur fire apparatus on their own.
John, told us as he left the firehouse that morning that he intended to remain on the roster as a volunteer, we’re glad to hear that and hope to see him when his busy schedule permits!
