Tonight’s training highlighted the use of the 2 1/2″ attack line and tips and techniques for managing this large handline for “big fire”/ commercial building application. We have had the use of the former Fazio’s restaurant to use as a training prop for a number of years now. Having this building made a great prop for stretching and advancing charged lines, we had the crews flow the nozzle out an open window on the second floor when we made it to the seat of the “fire”.
Many departments are conservative about the use of 2 1/2″ hose for initial fire attack. York Village Fire encourages this more than ample hose line as another “tool in the toolbox”. When crews encounter big fire, the “big line” is selected for its fire drowning prowess.
We also drilled outside the building with our new Akron portable ground monitor. We feed this ground monitor with 3″ hose (the green hose). All of our hose lines are color coded for ease of identification on a fire scene. The ground monitor is capable of flowing upwards of 400 gallons per minute and can be set up with a single firefighter.
