Tonight members drilled on search and rescue. That is searching a fire building for victims inside. Different techniques were employed to look for victims that may be trapped in the building. We tried searching with and without being assisted by a hoseline, it is preferable to search with a hoseline since it allows the firefighter’s to attack any fire they may encounter during their search, it also allows them an easy way out; follow the fire hose through the blinding smoke and it will take you out to the fire engine that it is hooked to.
We also used the thermal imaging camera to search for victims. This technology sees through the blinding smoke and sees objects according to how much heat they reflect, the thermal imaging camera can be used to hunt for hidden fires and also find trapped victims, it is a wonderful piece of modern technology and we are lucky to be able to employ it in York Village.
