York Village and York Beach, alongside many southern Maine and New Hampshire fire departments stood by as the fallen fire captain from Berwick, Maine was paraded by the Berwick firehouse on his way to the funeral home in Old Orchard Beach. The fire captain was killed Friday March 1 at a structure fire on Bell Dr. in Berwick. We are saddened by the passing of Capt. Joel Barnes. It was an honor to be a part of it today.
Despite the somber occasion it was very nice to see all our brother and sister firefighters from all over the region. A common greeting exchanged among us today was “why don’t we ever get all together for happy events??”
