A short lived early evening thunder storm caused a small fire in a cottage on Cycad Ave due to a lightning strike in the normally quiet York Beach neighborhood. Both fire departments were toned for a structure fire at 57 Cycad Avenue around 1900hours. Squad 2 and Truck 8 were out the door within a minute. While enroute Engine 1 from York Beach Fire arrived on scene and stated that he had light smoke showing. He requested Squad 2 take a nearby hydrant and lay into the scene. Squad 2 laid 350′ of 4″ into Engine 1. Crews from Truck 8 put the stick to the roof and assisted with opening up and checking for extension. Squad 2 crew worked inside doing the same. Companies were returned to York Village in about a half-hour. numerous other houses in the neighborhood sustained damage from the nearby lightning hit.
