At 16:04 hours York Dispatch began receiving calls for a dump truck rolled over at the Spur Rd. Lights. Companies arrrived to find a loaded tri-axle dump truck on its side in the middle of the northbound travel lane just south of the intersection, the dump truck hit numerous vehicles before rolling over partially on top of one of the vehicles.
Squad 2 and Engine 4 responded, with 22 members and found 2 patients trapped in two different cars, one of them dangerously close to the tires of the overturned dump truck. Crews utilized the Paratech struts to stabilize the truck simultaneously while the crew was getting dry chem extinguishers and a charged hoseline in place. The vehicle with the trapped occupant was stabilized before extrication began there. Captain Butler with the E4 crew handled the extrication of the patient on the other side of the dump truck simultaneously as well. That patient’s vehicle was full of dirt from the dump truck rolling over on it. crews from York Ambulance responded and requested a level I MCI (mass casualty incident) bringing mutual aid ambulances from Kittery and Ogunquit. Ogunquit also sent an Engine, York Beach responded with Engine 1 and Rescue 3. When it was all sorted out, there were 4 patients for transport to York Hospital. None of the injuries are believed to be life threatening. Companies were under control in 40 minutes. But remained on scene for several hours to assist. National Wrecker Service from Portsmouth with assistance from Jack’s towing from York writed the dump truck, towed the cars and cleaned up the road. The accident is being reconstructed by York Police with assistance from Maine State Police, their investigation is ongoing.
A special Thank You to our neighbors Stonewall Kitchen, a local York business who came out and set up a table on the front lawn of the York’s Chamber of Commerce to provide food and refreshments to first responders as well as those who were stuck on route 1 by the accident but who weren’t directly involved in it. We appreciate you guys being good neighbors and being kind enough to bring us some of your great food and cold water!!!!
