Today we close a chapter on the history of York Village Fire Department as we say good bye to Capt. Scott Apgar. Scott came on the York Village Fire Department as a volunteer in 1979. He was hired as a full time firefighter effective July 1, 1985. He is the 6th paid firefighter in the history of York Village Fire. Up until his hire date, there were only 2 paid firefighters and they worked 48 hours on and 48 hours off for an 84 hour workweek. Scott was hired as the third firefighter to reduce the work week from 84 to 56 hours a week.
Keith Bishop, John Hunt, and Scott Apgar worked together from 1985 until Keith and John both retired in 2014 leaving Scott as the senior most paid firefighter in the career ranks. Today is Scott’s last 24 hour shift after nearly 33 years. Pictured below is Scott in 1985 right after joining the full time ranks, and then his photo earlier today as many members and friends from outside the department stopped to wish him well. Keith Bishop and John Hunt even paid a visit and stopped for a quick photo opportunity with the new full time firefighter, Peter LaBreck.
Scott, we have had a lot of fun working alongside you all these years. We wish you well in your future endeavors, we sincerely hope you decide to stay on as a volunteer. GOOD LUCK and DON’T BE A STRANGER!!!!!
