This morning while Engine 6 and it’s crew were just clearing from the structure fire in South Berwick, York Village and York Beach were dispatched to York Pond Lane for a report of a structure fire. York Pond Lane is off York Shore Dr. off Route 91 on the extreme north end of York near the South Berwick town line, Engine 6 being in South Berwick actually put the apparatus and crew closer to the fire than if they had been in the firehouse in York Village. South Berwick Tank 3 was immediately requested to respond auto-aid to the fire by C-1 as they were just clearing their fire as well. Engine 6 and C-1 arrived on scene and had smoke showing from the rear of the residence, upon completing the 360 it was found that the chicken coop was on fire. Engine 6 crew consisted of Captain P. Balentine, Captain, D. Butler, and Lieutenant Nick Hilton, a single 1 3/4″ line was stretched to the rear of the building and the fire was quickly knocked down. South Berwick Tank 3 assisted by providing some tank water as there are no fire hydrants anywhere nearby. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was covering South Berwick Fire with an Engine company, they were released to respond to the fire as well and did assist on the scene. The fire was knocked down quickly, there were no injuries. The four chickens survived the fire by moving to the far end of the run and were unharmed, albeit a bit wet.
