Just after 1100 hours on Monday morning South Berwick Fire was toned to respond to Roberts Rd. For a report of a structure fire. South Berwick C1 arrived on scene and reported a working fire and quickly requested a second alarm, York Village was requested to respond with an Engine and a tanker. Engine 6 signed on with a crew and Engine 4 was right out the door behind it, Engine 4 was subsequently cancelled. Engine 6 responded into the scene; though the quick work from the South Berwick jakes made QUICK work of the fire. York Village assisted with fire investigation and completing overhaul. This was the first fire since the burial of Capt. Barnes and his death in the line of duty on March 1. His death was on the front of every firefighters mind and we approached our work with a bit more caution. The South Berwick and York Village gang get along exceptionally well and it was a pleasure to work alongside them, it was also good to get that first fire out of the way and begin healing from the loss. Getting “back to work” feels like the most natural way for us to grieve the loss of Joel.
